Summer Playlist
I abandoned Spotify for a portable CD player and an iPod (graciously gifted by a friend) and the only things I feel I’m missing out on are the playlists I used to make throughout every season. They became little time capsules of who I was and what I was experiencing. I make this in the hopes of continuing that tradition and finding these playlists a new place to live.
Glow – Alice Phoebe Lou
This is a late spring song that is bleeding into my early summer. I’m trying to understand and love myself a bit better than I have been.I am smiling, I am screaming, I am glowing from inside, Do I dare to feel this feeling? I also miss my mom and know she’s keeping score for me.
Face to Face – Daft Punk
Gypsy Woman – Crystal Waters
Drunk Girls – LCD Soundsystem
Our friend had a pool party for her 25th birthday and we got to spend the first real hot day of summer day drinking. Afterwards me, Kenny, and Jacob came back to our apartment and played music and danced around in our bathing suits. We took turns picking the songs and these are the highlights. We smelled like sunscreen and rehydrated sweat.
You Can Have It All – Yo La Tengo
Infectious.
Fruits of My Labor - Waxahatchee
Waxahatchee is like a mother and a sister and a daughter to me all at the same. Rolled into one. Sounds kind of weird but just to say I feel close to her somehow. This Lucinda Williams cover she did has been stuck in my head.
Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey – Paul McCartney
My boyfriend put me on this. You should put on this album and walk around and enter the Paul McCartney fugue state. My boyfriend questioned my use of "fugue state" here because I guess what he experiences is more of a flow state which isn't really how I feel listening to it but I'd love to collect more samples.
Stoned at the Nail Salon – Lorde
My favorite summer album is Solar Power by Lorde. I hate the winter, can’t stand the cold. The first real spring week of every year feels like an awakening to me. A dethawing. A rebirth that fills my head with these familiar songs. Last year it was Mood Ring, upbeat and reflective of a search for a more “authentic” existence. This year I find myself humming this more mellow, contemplative single as I feel my life stretching from pages into chapters and have to reckon with all the different emotions that brings along with it.
Everybody's Coming to My House - David Byrne
Kenny bought the American Utopia concert movie during the Criterion Sale and we threw it on one day while we deep cleaned the apartment. I want to have everyone over at my house and I want everyone to know that I keep extra toothbrushes under the sink in case you get too tired to go home.
U.S.S.R. by Wildfire
This is in the soundtrack of a movie I haven't seen and will probably never see and I think will be stuck in my head forever.
